This course is designed to equip seafarers with essential survival skills and knowledge to react efficiently to an emergency abandonment situation, both with and without a life raft. It covers both theoretical and practical aspects of survival at sea.
Understand Survival Principles:
- Recognize the potential hazards associated with marine accidents.
- Understand the physiological effects of exposure to cold water.
- Know how to conserve body heat and minimize heat loss.
- Be aware of the importance of psychological preparedness for survival.
· Use Personal Protective Equipment:
- Properly don and adjust lifejackets and immersion suits.
- Understand the limitations and capabilities of personal protective equipment.
- Know how to maintain and care for personal protective equipment.
· Emergency Procedures:
- Understand emergency procedures for abandoning ship.
- Know how to activate emergency alarms and distress signals.
- Be familiar with muster stations and emergency assembly points.
· Life Raft Operations:
- Understand the types and components of life rafts.
- Know how to deploy and right a capsized life raft.
- Be able to enter and exit a life raft safely.
- Understand the procedures for survival in a life raft, including rationing food and water, maintaining warmth, and signaling for help.
· Personal Survival Skills:
- Practice basic survival techniques, such as treading water and floating.
- Know how to signal for help using visual and auditory methods.
- Understand the importance of staying calm and conserving energy.
