RADAR & NAVIGATIONAL SIMULATOR COURSE

img12 Section

img16 Hours

This mandatory STCW training provides seafarers with practical skills in radar operation, collision avoidance, and electronic navigation using realistic ship simulators. The course combines theory and hands-on exercises to ensure compliance with COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea) and SOLAS safety standards.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Operate Radar & ARPA Systems

? Set up and adjust radar displays (range scales, gain, tuning, anti-clutter).
? Use ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) to track targets and calculate:

  • CPA (Closest Point of Approach)
  • TCPA (Time to CPA)
? Recognize radar limitations (blind sectors, false echoes, sea clutter).

2. Apply COLREGs for Collision Avoidance

? Interpret Rule 5-8 (lookout, risk assessment, action to avoid collisions).
? Determine safe passing distances in crossing, head-on, and overtaking scenarios.
? Execute proper maneuvers (course/speed changes) under COLREGs.

3. Conduct Radar Plotting (Manual & ARPA-Assisted)

? Perform relative and true motion plotting.
? Analyze target vectors to assess collision risks.
? Detect and respond to small vessels, icebergs, or floating hazards.

4. Navigate in Restricted Visibility

? Manage fog, heavy rain, or darkness using radar as primary navigation tool.
? Coordinate with AIS/ECDIS for enhanced situational awareness.

5. Handle Emergency Scenarios

? Respond to sudden target appearances (e.g., fast-moving vessels).
? Recover from radar/ARPA failures (fallback to manual plotting).

6. Improve Situational Awareness & Decision-Making

? Avoid over-reliance on automation (verify ARPA data manually).
? Practice Bridge Resource Management (BRM) techniques.
